If you insist on going out today and buying a camera, I suggest the Canon Rebel 2000. It's inexpensive and allows you to get great results fairly easily. Make sure to consider the larger film formats if you are serious about landscape and still life as I am. You'll never be taken seriously in the landscape world if all you shoot is 35mm like the amateurs. 35mm is an amateur format. The only legitimate professional use of 35mm is for newspapers and sports, and most of those have gone digital anyway
