Extension tubes are a great way to try out macro photography. They are not
too expensive and contain no optics, so they will not degrade image quality
in themselves, however, they won't be as good as a true macro lens, because
conventional lenses are not designed to perform best at macro distances.
Even if you purchase a macro lens later, you will still be able to use an
extension tube for greater magnification than the macro lens alone can
provide.

In most cases, I would choose an extension tube over a tele-extender or a
screw-in diopter lens for best results."
